At PASNAP, we believe healthcare is a human right — not a privilege reserved for those who can afford it or those lucky enough to have the right job. Yet in Pennsylvania and across the country, millions of people go without the care they need because of cost. Patients delay treatment, skip prescriptions, or face crushing medical debt, all in one of the richest countries in the world. That’s unacceptable.
Medicare for All would change that. It’s a single-payer, national health program that covers every person in the U.S., guaranteeing comprehensive care — from doctor visits to hospital stays to prescription drugs — without co-pays, deductibles, or surprise bills.
Our current patchwork healthcare system leaves too many people behind. Even those with insurance often can't afford to use it. Hospital bills remain the number one cause of bankruptcy in America. Employers shift costs onto workers through higher premiums and deductibles. And patients are denied care every day because it isn't "in network" or doesn't meet some corporate insurance company's definition of "medically necessary."
Nurses see the toll this takes:
This system doesn't put patients first. It puts profits first.
Under Medicare for All, everyone is covered — no premiums, no deductibles, no medical bills at all. Care is funded through a fair, progressive tax system that costs most families less than they pay now for premiums, deductibles, and out-of-pocket expenses combined.
Key benefits include:
Universal Coverage — Every resident, regardless of job, income, or health status, gets the same high-quality coverage.
Comprehensive Care — Hospital care, doctor visits, dental, vision, mental health, long-term care, prescriptions — all included.
Freedom of Choice — Patients choose their providers, not their insurance network.
Lower Costs Overall — By cutting administrative waste and negotiating fair drug prices, Medicare for All saves billions.
PASNAP nurses have been on the front lines of the Medicare for All movement for years, joining rallies, lobbying lawmakers, and speaking out about the harm caused by our profit-driven healthcare system. We partner with coalitions like Healthcare-NOW! and National Nurses United to build public support and push legislation forward at the state and federal levels.
We know this is a big fight — insurance and pharmaceutical companies spend millions lobbying to protect their profits. But we've taken on powerful industries before and won. Our victory on Act 102 and our ongoing push for safe staffing prove that when nurses organize, we can make transformative change.
Medicare for All means every patient gets the care they need, when they need it — no bills, no denials, no medical bankruptcies. It's the only system that truly puts patients over profits.
We use our collective strength to advocate for things like safe staffing, universal access to healthcare, and prevention of harassment and violence against healthcare workers. Our advocacy was instrumental in passing Act 102, Pennsylvania's ban on mandatory overtime for healthcare workers.
