PASNAP Members Join with Nurses of PA for Safe Staffing Summit

On July 30th and 31st, 15 PASNAP nurses joined 120 union and non-union nurses from 40 counties around the state for a safe staffing summit in Harrisburg. SEIU and PASNAP cosponsored the event along with Nurses of PA. Nurses of PA was formed in 2017 to bring together the collective power of all 250,000 nurses in Pennsylvania — one in every 50 people in Pennsylvania — to pass legislation requiring safe patient limits for nurses in Hospitals and long term care facilities.

Nurses of PA organized a statewide lobby week in the spring in which 200 nurses participated in 30 counties across PA. That helped to generate 49 co-sponsors of safe staffing legislation in the PA House and Senate. The highlight of the summit was nurses delivering 10,000 signatures on a safe staffing petition to the chairs of the House and Senate health committees, and asking for a hearing on the bills. This action garnered widespread news and social media attention.

Also at the summit nurses made plans for a second lobby week September 17th to 24th, to take advantage of the fact that 90% of state legislators are up for re-election in November.  The plan is to do 100 visits with legislators and candidates who are running for office, to see where they stand on the safe staffing bills, and to communicate those results to nurses around the state so that nurses can vote for candidates who support safe staffing in November.

PASNAP members joined with other nurses to deliver thousands of petitions to the State Capitol calling for legislators to take action on Safe Patient Limits.

We need as many nurses as possible to join in this project! Contact us to find out how you can participate in the legislative visits and contribute to fund the effort.
